Kale is a member of the cruciferous vegetable family and is related to broccoli, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts. It is considered a superfood, and with good reason, as this leafy, curly cabbage contains large amounts of vitamin A, vitamin K, vitamin C, and minerals such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, and iron.
These vitamins and minerals, with their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, improve liver function, aiding in daily detoxification of the body. In addition, they contribute to maintaining healthy vision, improving hematocrit, reducing cholesterol and supporting the proper functioning of the immune system.
Despite all its benefits, kale should be part of a balanced diet, as it contains calcium oxalate, iodine and nitrates, which when not given in appropriate amounts for body weight, could cause stomach upset, kidney and bladder stones (urolithiasis), as well as affect the thyroid gland. Taking the above into account, its use in elderly animals, in animals with a history of bladder, kidney and thyroid pathology should be done with caution and without exaggeration.
